Martha Casanave
Jest absolwentką Międzynarodowego Instytutu Sztuki w Monterey w zakresie języka rosyjskiego i literatury. Pracę zawodową rozpoczęła jako tłumacz w Waszyngtonie. Zmieniła jednak kierunek swej zawodowej kariery wybierając fotografię, którą interesowała się od dzieciństwa. Przez dziesięć lat (1984-1995) łączyła swoje dwie pasje: język rosyjski i fotografię, organizując wycieczki amerykańskich fotografów do Rosji, aby spotkali się tam ze swoimi rosyjskimi kolegami po fachu. Otrzymała stypendium Polaroid Corporation na zrealizowanie serii fotografii otworkowych Leningradu zimą i wzięcie udziału w wielu sympozjach fotograficznych w Rosji.
Martha fotografuje i wystawia od ponad trzydziestu lat. Poprowadziła wiele warsztatów fotograficznych i wykładów w USA, a także za granicą. Od 1992 regularnie zajmuje się fotografią otworkową i wykłada w dwóch szkołach Monterey Peninsula College.
W 1979 roku otrzymała nagrodę Imogen Cunningham Photography Award, a w roku 1989 została uhonorowana nagrodą Koret Israel Prize. Jej książka "Past Lives - Photographs by Martha Casanave" ("Życie przeszłe - Fotografie Marthy Casanave") została wydana w 1991 r. przez wydawnictwo Godine. Jej druga pozycja "Beware of Dog" ("Uważaj na psa") została wydana przez Center for Photographic Art w 2002 r. Jej najnowsza książka, w całości poświęcona fotografii otworkowej, pt. "Explorations Along an Imaginary Coastline" została wydana przez Hudson Hills Press w 2006 roku. Fotografie Casanave włączone zostały do wielu ważnych kolekcji m.in. Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Bostonie, Instytutu Sztuki Nowoczesnej w Chicago, Muzeum Stanforda, Biblioteki Narodowej Francji, J. Paul Getty Museum i prywatnej kolekcji Grahama Nasha.
Jej ostatnia indywidualna wystawa fotografii otworkowej miała miejsce w Verve Gallery w Santa Fe w Nowym Meksyku w styczniu 2009 roku.
Martha Casanave
graduated from the Monterey Institute of International Studies with a degree in Russian Language and Literature and began her working life as a translator in Washington, DC. She later changed careers, choosing photography, which she had engaged in passionately since childhood. Every year for ten years (1984 - 1995), however, she combined her knowledge of Russian and photography by organizing tours of American photographers to meet their counterparts in the Soviet Union. She also received travel grants from the Polaroid Corporation to make a series of pinhole photographs of Leningrad in winter, and to participate in several photographic symposia in Russia.
She has been an exhibiting and working photographer for over thirty years. She has taught many workshops and master classes in the U.S. and abroad. Since 1992, she has regularly taught photography at two Monterey Peninsula colleges.
She was awarded the Imogen Cunningham Photography Award (1979) and also was a 1989 recipient of the Koret Israel Prize. Her book Past Lives-- Photographs by Martha Casanave was published by Godine in 1991. Her second book, Beware of Dog, was released by the Center for Photographic Art in 2002. Her most recent book (exclusively pinhole) called Explorations Along an Imaginary Coastline, was published by Hudson Hills Press in 2006.
Casanave's photographs are included in many major collections, such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Stanford Museum, the Bibliotheque Nationale, the J. Paul Getty Museum , and the Graham Nash private collection.
Her latest solo exhibit of pinhole photographs was held at Verve Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico in January of 2009.
