Szwecja – Sweden

Hägersten

Born 1967.
Lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.

Started using pinhole cameras in 1990. The pinhole camera is still my favourite tool given it´s combination of being unpredictable and giving somewhat semi-surrealistic results - you can see what was in front of the camera, but it slightly differs from how you normally see it.

Inside/Out – self-portraits

This ongoing series contains my self-portraiture in natural surroundings. The act of making photographic self-portraits is spontaneous and intuitive. I rarely plan the images, but improvise by acting at the specific scene.
It is a somewhat unconscious process.
I cannot see myself through the camera lens, and working with analogue material, I have to wait to see the results until the film is processed.
By taking self-portraits using myself as a model, I enhance the element of chance in the images - something that is always very important in my art.
But it is not a fully uncontrolled process: the images are made as stage-settings, where I build up a situation where I put myself in a role - and then use the camera to actually document the setting and moment.

The resulting images are all about identity, hope, fear and trust.

It has been important to use the photographic medium. If I would have been able to paint it, it still wouldn't have given the same impact and effect.
These are parts of sceneries that obviously have existed (they are recorded by the camera), but they are scenes that no one has ever have seen. This gives a tension between the authenticity and the notion that it is never possible to see the sceneries in real life.
